19TH HOLE

Masters Gets Real at 12th Hole

The 12th Hole

The par-3 12th is where the Masters gets real, and I mean that in the worst way possible. I played that hole in '09, and the wind off Rae's Creek is no joke. It's a menace. The 12th plays 155 yards, but with that wind, it feels like 170. You can run your strokes-gained models, I'll watch the guy's hands on the grip. Scheffler's double on 12 was ugly, and it's a miracle he recovered. That was a what-the-heck approach, but he managed to save par on the next hole. I would've taken a different line, played it safer, but that's just me. The guy's got guts. ## The 13th Hole The 13th is reachable in two, but that creek is lurking like a hangover. You don't want to wake up on the wrong side of it, trust me. McIlroy's been here before, and he knows how to navigate it. His birdie at the 13th in the opening round was slick. He took a risk, went for the green, and it paid off.

You can't win the Masters on the 13th, but you can sure lose it

I disagree. You can win it on the 13th, or at least set yourself up for a chance. A birdie or an eagle there can give you the momentum you need to take on the rest of the course. Just ask Shane Lowry, who eagled it in 2022. ## The 15th Hole The 15th is where eagles happen, and tournaments flip. It's a hole that can make or break you, and I've seen it happen to the best of them. Justin Rose knows a thing or two about it, having eagled it in 2023. It's a risk-reward hole, and you've got to be willing to take the chance. It's not just about the 15th, though. It's about the entire back 9 on Sunday. That's the most pressure-packed stretch in sports, and you've got to be ready for it. I've seen guys like Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka navigate it, but I've also seen them stumble. ## The Putter The putter is where championships are won or lost. You can hit all the fairways and greens you want, but if you can't sink the putts, you're done. I've seen guys like Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele make some incredible putts over the years. It's not just about the stats, though. It's about the feel, the touch, the confidence. You've got to believe in your putter, and you've got to be willing to take the risk.
