19TH HOLE

Rory Takes Charge at Augusta

I just walked into the clubhouse and I'm still trying to process what I just saw out there. Rory McIlroy is looking like the man to beat right now. He's got a two-shot lead and he's playing some of the best golf I've seen all year. But it's not just McIlroy who's playing well. Tommy Fleetwood is right in the mix after making some great shots. He's been here before, so he knows what it takes to compete at Augusta. And let me tell you, he's got the game to do it. On the other hand, some guys are really struggling. Jake Knapp made a double bogey at a hole and then followed it up with an eagle at another. What the heck was that approach, by the way? It was like he forgot how to play golf for a second. But then he goes and makes an eagle, which just shows you how crazy this game can be. I'm telling you, the key to this tournament is going to be navigating the course beautifully. McIlroy did that, making some great shots. But others struggled. As I'm sitting here at the bar, I'm saying to the bartender,

This Masters is shaping up to be a real shootout, my friend. We've got a bunch of guys who can really play, and it's going to come down to who can make the most putts on Sunday.

The putter is where championships are won or lost. Looking ahead, I think Justin Rose is a guy to watch. He's been here before and he's got the experience and the game to compete. And don't count out Tyrrell Hatton either. He's been playing some great golf lately, and he's got the length and the accuracy to take on Augusta. It's going to be a wild ride, folks. Buckle up.
